Nice horned owls stole the present in Schenley Park from March into April. Now Frick’s personal barred owl household has two fledglings branching and flying this month.
Barred owls (Strix varia) have lived in Frick Park for about 5 years and although they missed nesting final 12 months they’ve two fledglings this spring. On 7 June Charity Kheshgi and I met on the Hutchinson entrance to go discover them.
The primary clue for me have been the sounds of upset robins and blue jays which we adopted to the overall space. As soon as there Charity and my Merlin app may hear the decision of a barred owl juvenile. We waited for it to make a transfer.
Finally one, then two, fledglings awkwardly flapped and branched from tree to tree.

The teenager with the darkish face perched the place we may see it between the leaves.

Charity captured video of the teenager calling. Are you able to hear it? Due to upper-range listening to loss I can not hear any of it however I can see the chicken open its beak to make the decision.
When you go on the lookout for these owls, hear for upset songbirds to “inform” you the place the birds are hanging out. You’ll have an enormous benefit discovering them should you can hear their high-pitched calls!
p.s. Charity and I noticed three owls directly however the third was very obscured by leaves. We thought it was a third fledgling however was it an grownup? A short while later we noticed an grownup and solely two fledglings. Michelle Kienholz has watched this household for months and confirms there are solely two children.
