5 August 2025
I used to assume that songbird migration started when the children return to highschool in late August or early September however that’s not true for these two species. Each are already on migration and can quickly disappear from our space.
Yellow warbler (Setophaga petechia)
On a stroll close to Herrs Island on Friday 25 July I heard six yellow warblers singing. On 3 August I heard just one. Yellow warblers are already on the transfer and will likely be gone from Pittsburgh by the week of 16 August. We in all probability have lower than 10 days left to see them. Watch them ebb and move on the eBird weekly abundance map under this picture.

Baltimore oriole (Icterus galbula)
Except you could have an oriole feeder (providing oranges or jelly) you in all probability haven’t seen a Baltimore oriole shortly. The males perch prominently in Could however appear to vanish whereas they nest. Throughout July they’re onerous to search out in Pittsburgh however that’s about to vary.
In the course of the week of 9 August those that nested north of us will arrive on migration. Look ahead to them quickly as they move via Pittsburgh within the subsequent 4 weeks. They’ll all be passed by 6 September as proven within the eBird Weekly Abundance animation under this picture.
