30 March 2024
Yesterday morning Amy Henrici discovered a barnacle goose (Branta leucopsis) with a flock of Canada geese on the Allegheny River in East Deer Twp. That is an extremely uncommon chicken for Pittsburgh contemplating that its winter vary is in Northern Europe.
Barnacle geese breed within the Arctic — Greenland, Svalbard and Siberia — plus a couple of locations in Northern Europe, and spend the winter in Eire, the UK, and the coast of the North Sea.
My guess is that it by accident turned southwest (as an alternative of southeast) when it left Greenland and finally arrived in Pittsburgh 3,000 miles away.

Many birders visited the hotspot to catch a glimpse of the chicken. Corvus captured superior images.
My day was so busy yesterday that I didn’t go see the goose however I’ve seen them in Finland so I didn’t really feel too dangerous.
I finished by this morning, 30 March, and noticed him.

It looks as if a wierd coincidence that I wrote about barnacle geese simply three weeks in the past. They by no means come right here … and now one has.
p.s. Right here’s how they bought their “barnacle” identify.
