This weekend I’m visiting household at Cape Cod and looking out ahead to catching up with the fiddler crabs that reside at Wellfleet Bay.

Fiddler crabs are any considered one of 107 species within the household Ocypodidae which can be discovered on the coasts of the Americas, the Indo-Pacific, West Africa, and a small south-facing area of Portugal.

The males, pictured above, are the one ones with a “fiddle” claw whereas the females have two small claws, under. The males generally use the fiddle to struggle one another however I see this so hardly ever that I took a number of pictures.

Because the fiddle is just too massive to eat with, the females can eat twice as quick because the males.

This 2018 video from PBS NOVA explains why the males have such a big claw and what they really use it for.

To see the fiddler crabs I’ll have to concentrate to the tides. They solely come out at low tide and at my favourite viewing spot at Wellfleet Bay a marker in 2017 indicated that Goose Pond and Strive Island Trails could be underwater at excessive tide.

This yr’s map reveals it will get inundated. I’d wish to see the marker at excessive tide too however then I’d miss the crabs.
