Northern cardinals, early spring (photograph from Wikimedia Commons)

31 March 2025

Yesterday morning it was sprinkling once I left for the Duck Hole outing. It regarded like extra rain would come so there have been solely three of us: Andy, John and myself.

At first we noticed a typical merganser pair, a flock of three lesser scaup, two wooden geese in flight and one bufflehead (as promised).

Probably the most quite a few two species are often mallards and Canada geese however yesterday they had been topped by northern cardinals and red-winged blackbirds conspicuously singing, chasing, consuming and chasing once more. (The photographs are from Wikimedia, not our outing.)

Andy discovered a tiny snail on the transfer with its antennae main the way in which. By the point I took its image it was hiding underneath leaves. Its outstretched neck and head are contained in the pink circle however it’s so darkish that it’s laborious to see.

Again on the car parking zone John identified a northern rough-winged swallow flying over the river, thought of “uncommon” by eBird as a result of it confirmed up in March.

Should you haven’t seen or heard one other new arrival but, the japanese phoebe, go to Duck Hole. We noticed/heard three.
